Marseille officially launched at a massive press conference his candidacy for European Capital of Sports for 2017. The Pavilion M, an emblem of the European Capital of Culture, was the venue chosen for the occasion, by the side of the Vieux-Port. The mayor, Jean-Claude Gaudin, and vice president of ACES Europe, John Swanson, were in charge of announcing the nomination to the audience where also attended all authorities of sport in Provence and France.
"Winning this award would give us a very important quality mark being open the doors to new grants on issues related to excellence in sport, health, integration, intergenerational sport and new infrastructures" said in the press conference Richard Miron , Councillor for Sports Marseilles.
Marseille's rival will probably be Sofia, capital of Bulgaria.
